Great Fishing Out of the Merrimack River

Jul 17, 2009

Striper report- The comercial Striped Bass season has kicked off to a great start. Live lining Mackeral has been the bait of choice during the day and Joppa Flats with tube and worm at night. most of the fish I caught last night were covered with sea lice letting me know the fish just arrived from offshore and there are more coming up from Stellwagen as the water temperatures heat up down there. Niner rigs are also producing many stripers alot of which are in the 34" to 40" range. Life in the river is starting to pick up however there is still a lot of water coming down and the action is starting a little late on the outgoing tide.

Bluefin Tuna- If you are fishing jeffries ledge troll around the cove and look for bait balls while your out there. Herring is very plentiful and you can use the bait to find the tuna or jig some up for some livelining. Since there is plenty of Mackeral around it might not be a bad idea to throw some in the live well on your way out. The Northwest corner produced a 900lb tuna yesterday but most of the football tuna action has been at the Southwest Corner.
