Crossroads Bait and Tackle Fish Report > tough to catch the mackeral
tough to catch the mackeral

Jul 2, 2010

The mackeral are thinning out at breaking rock and there are dogfish on Speckled Apron. The mackeral are still around to some degree and with a little effort you can find enough to fish with. They are mixed in with alot of pollock so you will need to fish through them and try baiting your hooks. The bluefish started to show their face but there are still some stripers around the mouth of the Merrimac River so be prepared for either. off the beach fresh clams are working the best and for artificials we have been throwing Spro Bucktails naked and with a Slug-go. The flounder fishing has been excelent and guys have been catching plenty of 15 inchers off of spreaders.

Tuna have been in heavy between the rockpile and Tillies. The are feeding on finger herring which some people are mistaking for sand eels. Herring is a better feed for the big ones having a high oil and fat content. That is why we are seeing the big Tuna feeding on such a small bait. usually the big boys don't feed on sand eels because it takes too many to sustain a healthy weight. In these areas size down your baits and try some small metals in order to match the hatch.

Cod and Haddock are all over Tillies with a few less cod up on Jeffries ledge by the Cove and the Curl. Glow in the Dark Norwegian's are hammering them in the deep water and if you can get away from the dogs throw some bait down on double hook rigs.

Good Luck Happy 4th of July, and remember the soldiers that fight oversees for someone elses freedom like my brother Rick. We freely fish because of people like him. All military are 10% off at Crossroads this weekend.
