Joppa is hot
Joppa is hot
May 23, 2011
It was a cold rainy morning today, but anyone who ventured out to Joppa Flats on the Merrimac River was well rewarded for their efforts. Which was a big change from merely one day ago. Yesterday I boated a keeper on Joppa and a couple small stripers however I had to work hard for them. I threw everthing in my tackle box and fished some tinker macks. Today was a different story. Alewife Slug-os were very hot. I think the big batch of fish that were hanging out in the Parker River made their way over to the Flats. For the shore fisherman Deer Island continues to produce some nice action right after high tide. FYI you have to take the bridge from Newburyport to get there the Salisbury side is being repaired. Cod and Haddock continue to be hit or miss, however the large spawn fish that we usually pick up on Long Ledge or the Mud Hole will be leaving the spawning grounds soon if they havn't already. The best reports have been coming from the Curl. Tuna Season Opens up soon so start getting your gear ready. Last 2 years in a row Captain Ed Cloutier (Fishy Bizness Charters Also a member of The Crossroads Fishing Team) boated a tuna in the first week of June. This will hopefully make 3 years running. Good Luck
