The Striper Bite at the beach has been on fire. Our buddy Coop went to Plum Island the other day and caught a 45 Inch striper and had a couple of double hookups and landed 2 other keepers. He caught them in the thick overcast that has hung around near low tide. He quotes " I havn't seen the beach produce this many stripers in within the last 10 years". He was using a combination of fresh clams, sea worms and tinker mackeral. The huge waves over the last couple of days has made it hard to impossible to fish the mouth so grab a surfcaster and hit the beach. Before this northeast wind started Breaking Rock was very consistent for getting bait and the winds will probably just blow more bait in close. Also when you have big surfs clams tend to work very well especially near rocks. Stripers wait for the clams to smash up on the rocks and break away the shell before they eat them. And no wind naturally produces this effect better than a North East wind in the Merrimac River. Also some Bluefish have started showing up so be prepared for them.
The tuna fishing bite continues to be high in the water column. Spreader bars are back as the hot ticket. The way last season went and this season is starting it is gonna be very tough for the recreational anglers to find and hook fish under 59 inches. The majority of the early fish seem to be between 65 and 75 inches. Reports from Cape Cod are showing some smaller footballs but not up around Cape Ann and North. The Planes and Stick boats have been seeing some huge schools of big tuna out on the Curl.
