Good Action
Jul 14, 2011
The striper action in the mouth has been very good. Like most years July has made it difficult to find the big bass but we are seeing a ton of fish in the 30"-33" inch range in the mouth of the Merrimac River. Either drifting live mackeral or chunk bait off the jetty's has been producing these fish. There doesn't seem to be a lot of bluefish at the mouth but we bagged a bunch of blues out at twin Sisters(the two hump just SoutEast of the mouth). On Tuesday one angler weighed in a 53Lbs striper that he caught ballooning Live mackeral on the 3 mile line, however the numbers out there are way down from this time last year despite some huge schools of mackeral and baitfish in the area. The flats are producing on average about 2 fish per boat that is over 34" eeling at night.
Tuna were seen exploding the last couple days between the 180 line and Whaleback. These fish still havn't descended and almost all the action has been on the surface. Kite fishing is growing big time up in this area, especially with the abundance of mackeral.
The cod and haddock fishing out at the Curl seems to have improved. This has been due to a reduction in the dogfish. Most anglers report less dogs over the last few days than the previous week making it easier to focus on the targeted groundfish.
