Getting Geared Up For The Fall Run
Aug 19, 2011
The Striper fishing was slow the last two weeks, however that seems to be changing with the last couple trips and reports. Rob Frye reported hitting 7 nice stripers on Joppa Flats Wednesday night. It was a short bite cause they all came within about an hour and a half of each other but there is definately a new batch of fish that have shown up in the river. 12" double rigged slug-go's were the lure of choice that night. There have been some big bluefish hitting out at the mouth of the Merrimac River and they on occasion have made their way on to the flats. Mackeral were getting a little finicky but they seem to be back in full force which would explain the increase in striper action the last couple days.
The Tuna Fleet are bringing in fish every day. The bite is moving between the 180 line North of Halibut Point, Long Ledge and Boone Island. Most guys are fishing Live whiting or live Mackeral. A lot of anglers are fishing the mackeral on the shallow baits and whiting on the deep rods for a buffet fit for a tuna.
Cod and Haddock are hitting good out on Jeffrey's Ledge. There is some action in closer but you will have to deal with a lot of shorts. We did very well on out last charter fishing Norwegian Jigs but all the haddock came in off of fresh clams.
The flounder bite has been very good and kept alot of anglers busy while waiting for the stripers to come back. Outside the mouth of the merrimac in 25 ft of water inside the south Jetty is where they have been hanging out.
