New Batch of Big Stripers
New Batch of Big Stripers
Jun 30, 2012
Anglers Ray and Gilles had a killer week fishing eels on the Merrimack River this week. They caught a 49 inch striper a few nights ago and topped it off with a 50inch 50pounder two nights ago. Check out the Crossroads Facebook page for pics of these monsters. I went out yesterday with Dave Mariani, his dad and his Uncle Mac and we started out with some real nice fish out at Speckled Apron and would have had a great day if we didn't get pushed in due to the thunder and lightning. We didn't mind the heavy rain and neither did the Stripers but made a decision to leave when the sky lit up. The Mackeral were in thick yesterday. We had full Sabiki rigs before a piece of chum hit the water. We threw the livies out on balloons and in bout 20 min after we got our chum line going got our first two keepers of the day with a double header. The bass were scaring our baits up to the surface before we watched them come and crush the macks up high. The mouth was producing some fish but not as productive as my previous trip on Sunday where we were catching two or three fish a drift. The Blues are still mixed in out front with an occasional strike inside the river.
Harrison Stearns hooked one Bluefin Tuna briefly 6 miles outside the mouth but didn't even have a chance to fight it when it spit the hook. There have been tuna sightings and catches all over the place. A few striper guys have already been spooled near Hampton Shoal Ledge. Luis of LD Marine bagged a couple last weekend, the biggest being a 550 pounder. The bait balls of herring are thick out on Jeffreys Ledge and if your in the hunt for my favorite tuna bait(big Whiting) they can be found on the 180 or 30fathom line.
The Groundfishing has stayed very consistent out at the Curl. Most guys have limited out and it has been a lot easier to do since they lowered the legal length on Cod and Haddock and decreased the bag limit to 9 fish. Fresh clams on Chartreuse teasers have been very productive this last week. Some of these groundfish have started moving in a little with some increasingly good reports from Old Scantum.
