Labor Day Weekend
Sep 7, 2012
Sorry Anglers I have not written a report in a while cause I havn't been able to fish, I tweeked my back lifting a tuna over the gunnel and have had major muscle spasms. I am back in action for this fall run, and just in time the tuna and striper bite has been excellent however the ground fishing still remains tough.
Stripers are in full swing and the flats at night have picked back up. Not sure for how long but I expect this year will go well into October. I don't usually see the flats pick up as much this late in the season as it did this year and usually work the beachfront alot this time of year. This season has been a strange one so I'm not surprised and I prefer to get em at Joppa. Live mackeral can be found at breaking rock early in the day however get real shy later on in the afternoon. Hampton Shoal Ledge has been more consistent for me this year. The water has produced a lot of great fishing stories this year including a blue shark caught from the surf, and the presence of Fluke. We arn't slaying the fluke but some is better than what we have seen in previous years.
The big Bluefin Tunas are being caught on a regular basis in close to shore with a couple days when the curl and cove heated up. There has been a bunch of fish taken off Long Ledge (aka Whale Back), but you won't be alone fishing there. There were a few fish taken at the Southwest Hump also. You can find bait at both these spots. Not just bait but good baits, the herring ball coming through are huge and we were able to get 4 at a time on the sabiki's. And if you have trouble catching the herring tip some of your sabikis with some clam or herring belly and drop them to the bottom in 240ft or deeper and you should pick up some nice whiting.
