Hungry Stripers in the River
May 12, 2013
The front of the bio-mass of stripers has shown up in the Merrimack River and keepers have been taken this week. I predicted they would show up this week in my last report and I was right. We had multiple keepers reported from the Parker River, Deer Island and further up river. Despite many surf fisherman most of them seem to be having limited success and the best action has been coming from inside the river. Water temperature and feed is better suited for bigger stripers in the river than in the ocean or on the beach front. The water temp in the river was in the higher fifties the other day dropping a few degrees once I got out towards the mouth and into the ocean. If you don't like fishing up river you can catch some stripers that are migrating through the backwaters from the Parker river at Joppa flats where these fish empty out into the Merrimack.
The groundfish bite has changed alot over the last week or so. There was an abundance haddock that has dispersed and the cod have moved back out to Jeffries Ledge for the post spawn feeding. Limiting out on cod is not very hard to do right now, and Jigs have taken some very nice fish. Pollock and haddock are mixed in, however there was a notable increase in cusk as well. Despite being slimey and hard to fillett many anglers love cusk in a good fish chowdah.
