Man it's Hot
Man it's Hot
Jul 19, 2013
The air and the water Temperature are very high, River Temp has hit up around 80F on some outgoing tide and the ocean front hovered around 71-72F out front along the beach. This has pushed some bluefish into our waters and decreased the size of stripers we are seeing around here, however there is still good action to be had. Especially since mackerel fishing and piles of bait has stayed good if not gotten better despite the heat. Mackerel are real sporadic and picky through the middle of the day but loading up first thing in the morning shouldn't be a problem. We had thousands of them around the boat all morning at Speckled Apron and caught a few nice stripers on balloons however the mackerel slowed way down around 930AM. The mouth is producing a lot of action on the outgoing tide. Upriver is too warm so don't travel too far from the mouth and the ocean.
The ground fishing has been hit or miss, some days the boats can't get away from the dogfish up and down Jeffrey's Ledge however there are some pretty good trips when the dog's are slow. Pack plenty of jigs, the bait will attract the dog's, they are scent hunters more than visual.
Every week we hear more and more tuna reports and this week they have been caught and seen as close as Speckled Apron and one guy had a double hook up out at Pigeon Hill a couple days ago. There is an abundance of nice whiting out front in the mud.
