New Batch of Fish
Jun 14, 2014
I caught some nice stripers in the River and on Joppa the other day that still had sea lice and heard the same report from some other regulars in the shop. This tells me a new batch of fish has shown up, because the sea lice dies after the striper hangs out too long in the brackish water. The keeper ratio and size of the striped bass I'm seeing is definately getting better, however I don't think has peeked yet. Usually this time of year is arguably some of the best striper fishing but I predict the best is yet to come. Especially since the night bite has barely started to see some consistent action. If your looking for mackeral I got a bunch at breaking rock earlier this week, well not right on breaking rock but close. I saw a ton of boats right on the rock not catching any so I pushed a little North East to a little hump in deeper water around 75ft and was banging them out 2-4 per sabiki.
There are a lot more keeper cod and haddock being caught than earlier this season. That being said you will still be throwing back a lot of your haddock brought on board. Tillies has been very hot, especially for finding the big haddock.
Ive started getting some good flounder reports and once again it looks like a couple black sea bass have occasionally shown their faces around here. The south Jetty has been the honey hole for both flounder and black sea bass. We don't usually see a lot of black sea bass around here so I doubt you'll get into them good but it might be worth a shot for some variety.
Tuna are on time and showing normal patterns with heavy surface action right now. Almost all of the fish I've heard of have been harvested by harpooning, trolling near the surface or kite baits kept up high. This is a great time to hook fish for the spinning guys also.
