Water Temp
Jul 16, 2014
There are a lot of nice striped bass around the Merrimack River, however they are giving a lot of anglers a tough time because of the drastic changes in water temperature from one location to another, and because many of these stripers are keyed in on Pogies, which is not very common in these parts. Some years we don't see any pogies at all. I've gotten reports and seen Temps varrying from 46F-74F, meaning that within a small distance you can go from too cold right over to warmer than desired waters. Find the sweat spot and you increase your chance of catching stripers, then realize the next day you might run into bad temps at the exact location, also the temps change at each location due to the tide, so you might have to move with it. Snag up some pogies and live line them, or use a nice oily feed like herring to catch some nice fish right now. There is some very nice herring around and we just got a nice fresh batch in.
I am getting more and more reports of tuna being caught by rod and reel, and the stick boats continue to do very well. The cooler waters offshore will probably keep the bite up high in the water column for longer than usual. muliple fish came in from near the Cove this week.
There are some sharks moving in however the temp break for warmer waters is a little bit of a ride out towards the "Elbow" and "Ups and Downs". Don't forget the first annual Newburyport Shark and Tuna Tournament is kicking off in August, however there is a 40 boat limit and 20 slots have already been paid for and reserved so if you plan on entering get your applications and checks in soon to gaurantee you a spot. You can download the forms at

good luck and we hope to see you at the tourney, even if you just show up for the weigh ins over at the boardwalk in Newburyport. It will be a good time.
