Crossroads mid Aug Report
Aug 9, 2014
The mackeral have been very sporatic lately. I went up to breaking rock the other day and first drift we hit about 20 mack's real quick, then they shut off and the pollock rolled in thick. They were dashing through my chum and I couldn't even see a single striped back after just having caught 20 macks in about 10 min earlier. We moved out to Hampton Shoal ledge and plucked away at another 15 or so mackerel and went back into the river to fish. The stripers have been mostly hitting in the mouth during the last 3 hrs of the outgoing tide. We saw tons of pogies boiling near the rips on the outside of the Plum Island Jetty's. Live Lining the Pogies have been a great way to catch some really big striped bass, however I hate planning on catching them in this area because they are so inconsistent. There are some really big stripers coming in off the beach at night using swim baits and eels. There have been very few bluefish around however if any of you guys catch any bring them down to Crossroads and we will buy them off you or trade them for store credit. We need them for the Newburyport Shark and Tuna tourney in 2 weeks.
The waters are loaded with blue sharks right now. There have been some mako reports mixed in off the first and second Island and heard two different reports of threshers only 3 miles off the beach.
A few Giant Bluefins were caught this week up at Old Scantum. Most hook-ups have been coming deeper in the water column between 20-30fathoms down down. Whiting has been pretty easy to find so that has been the bait of choice with live herring being a close second. Footballs are blowing up of Cape Ann in front of the rock pile. Ron-Z lures are deadly and put a few of the smaller blue fins on the deck down there.
Flounder can be found outside the mouth to the left around the lobster pots and been very abundant.
Good Luck, and remember we need bluefish for the Tournament
