Ripping Lip In May
May 22, 2017
Mackerel are in and we are paying top dollar, I will take as much as you can catch. The bigger stripers have shown up right behind them. There are still a ton of schoolies around however a lot more keepers and mid thirty inch fish starting to mix into the bunch. Mackerel colored Fin-S soft plastics on a 1/2 oz jighead started hitting with the arrival of the macs in the mouth and outfront of the beach, in river we crushed tons of stripers trolling the Slick Fish Tubes with a big ole sea worm on the back. The sturgeon have been very active too, despite not being able to target them they do get hooked while striper fishing and I heard of 3 of them hooked this week. remember to not take them out of the water and be very careful in your handling cause we want to help revive this endangered prehistoric looking fish in the Merrimack River.
Flounder are hitting now and guys fishing right off the Jetty's caught a bunch over the weekend. They are in close and you don't even need a boat to hook em up. Sea Worms and yellow grubs are the bait of choice.
Groundfishing is very strong right now and the haddock are abundant out there. Southern Jeffries has some decent haddock numbers, however the ratio of shorts is pretty high and you might want to steam out a little further to Tillies, or if you up North the Curl has been doing very well. High grounds are holding a ton of small Haddock and few Cod but if you want to get the keepahs get into about 240' of water off the Curl and fish through the Cod. Haddock is usually a bait game however some of the smaller Ahi jigs on some light line to get em down have been producing a higher ratio of keeper Haddock.
I heard the Salisbury Ramp docks still aren't in if you are trailering down anytime soon.
BRING ME YOUR FRESHLY CAUGHT MACKS to cover your fuel/tackle/ bait and beer or hit it hard and make a few bucks
