Happy 4th of July Fishing is hot
Jul 6, 2019
The Pogies are in and there is a ton of them out there. The giant schools of bait have drawn in some very nice Striped Bass as well as some other species like the occasional school of Bluefin Tuna right off the beaches. There have been a few schools off of Plum Island however they are very thick up in front of Salisbury beach. They have been very easy to find and snag. Many guys are just snagging and dropping. Other guys are choosing to troll with a double hooked stinger rig. The Merrimack River continues to produce a bunch of stripers but now that the water temps are rising its tough finding anything big upriver. Mackerel have been spotty out there as of recently, some mornings Breaking Rock has been producing however we have had a lot more luck up at Hampton Shoal Ledge. The Surfcasters have been throwing some larger poppers with some real nice fish to show for it.
Haddock fishing has been really good as far as numbers being caught but a lot of them have been short or just over the legal limit of 17inches. Lately we have been recommending Tillies or the Curl for some good action. drop some smaller jigs with a fly for a teaser if you are into the haddock and not near the cod. If you are having a mix of cod and haddock the cod usually out compete the haddock especially on jigs so feel it out. Last time I was out we caught very few cod and were able to stay on the haddock most of the day.
Tuna are starting to show up and there are a good amount of rod and reel fish coming in. Middle Bank on Stellwagen was the hot spot this week however we are seeing more and more North of the tip of Cape Ann. There is a lot of whiting in the deep water to find some good baits. Squid are starting to show up offshore and it might be like last year when all you could fish was squid because if you put anything else down the squid would kill it on you. it hasn't been like that yet but bring a couple squid jigs just in case.
The guys @Crossroads hope you are all having a great 4th of July weekend. Many people are noticing the 2nd Crossroads Bait and Tackle we opened up right on rt 110 and wondering what's up. That is Crossroads 2 and both shops will continue to stay up and running. Crossroads 1 is the headquarters and Crossroads 2 is the pit stop that might offer a little more convenience for guys fishing or launching at the reservation. If you miss seeing Tricky Dicky he is spending most of his hours at Crossroads 2 so pop by and give him a visit
